The Community Development Department plays an essential role in the development, improvement, and maintenance of the physical environment in Hawaiian Gardens. The Department provides the following services:

• Supplies information on planning, zoning, and housing programs;
• Reviews and process all new development proposals;
• Issues building permits and conducts inspections for new construction;
• Enforces the Municipal Code and correct code violations;
• Coordinates housing assistance and rehabilitation programs;
• Implements capital improvement and infrastructure projects; and
• Provides assistance to the City Manager, City Attorney, Planning Commission, City Council and the general public.
